The Royal Garden Hotel is not even close to being in the top 10 or even top 20 hotels I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. It’s the best hotel in Ozamiz, Philippines however that’s like saying it’s the best cell in the prison. There are many issues with the property as a whole. I, along with my significant other have had to switch rooms to room for multiple reasons. The stay in the first room possessed a nauseating smell, the second room and this is not a not a joke has an entity that shows itself from time to time in the room and the hotel staff knows and is aware of this entity. This room isn’t occupied often as the staff relayed and confirmed its presence. The property needs significant work. There was a fire or another hazard on the fourth floor during this latest stay. Sinks, showers and toilets do not drain, flush or operate properly or efficiently. Lighting fixtures and electrical outlets require professional maintenance throughout the property. The sheets/ bedding possess an unclean odor, most likely due to the lack of commercial Laundry standards. Sheets are hung outside to dry and it’s rainy season. Is my belief all these issues stem from a lack of personal accountability, along with a lack of a high degree of personal excellence and mental acuity. Any intelligent or well traveled individual will easily see and experience this lack of commitment to excellence or attention to detail in every aspect of life in Ozamiz from your all your dining experience to the local architecture, There are few straight plum lines or levels surfaces. Upkeep and maintenance are nonexistent. Good, reliable, quality service in the service industry is nonexistent in Ozamiz. I say this having worked many years in the service and sale industries. However the staff is helpful and friendly where they can be. It’s not the best place to rest your weary body after a long day of travel and activities, however it’s the best Ozamiz has to offer and that’s not saying much. Power outages happen everyday sometimes multiple times per day. WiFi is weak and unreliable. Cellular service suffers the same fate. If you had an emergency you need to be equipped to handle it yourself. Food and or dining options are extremely limited. Safety and security are a major issue anywhere in Ozamiz. Luckily the hotel has security on staff which you can regularly find sleeping at their post during your stay here. Individuals ill-equipped to protect themselves and or their loved ones should avoid Ozamiz and any other city in the Philippines. Closely watch your personal property to avoid theft. Local law enforcement is good however not great. Everything is much, much slower in Ozamiz. This will translate to your stay at the hotel. If you’re like me and are very capable at dealing with diversity and your personal security, traveling to Ozamiz and staying at the Royal Garden Hotel is the equivalent of exploring uncharted territory with many adventures around the bend. I do not recommend Ozamiz or this hotel for those individuals looking for a plush experience. You will not find it here. If you are the thrill sinking, adventurous type as I am you will find Ozamiz and the Royal Garden Hotel to your liking. If you get frustrated on bad hair days or when you get a hang nail this place is not for you. Adventurous types only. Trust me, you will only complain your entire stay. Otherwise go stay and have a great time.
