“Oscillating Experience”
I booked a standard room. But the in-room safe didn't work and the decor was dismal. I didn't even unpack. I requested another room. They moved me to another room where I unpacked and slept, but the antiquated, in-room safe was even too small for my I-Pad, the locking mechanism on the door was broken, and again this old hotel had crummy room decor. It had a good television opposite the bed. But the cable channels didn't work. So I had 14 snowy, channels in Tagalog. No English language channels or news stations. But worst of all, there was no hot water. What's the point of having a bath with no hot water? So, the following morning I packed up again, the bellboy brought a baggage trolley, I upgraded by paying an extra 500 pesos per nignt, and I moved to my third room which was much more inviting and comfortable where I had a modern, big in-room safe, hot water, cable channels in English, and all in all a completely inviting decor and atmosphere. But on my third day, the old fridge broke down while I was out. My cold beverages were warm when I came back. An hour later, room service replaced the old fridge with a new one. So I booked an extra 2 days in this upgraded Suite no.1 . The problem with this old hotel is that despite renovations since I last stayed here 10 years ago, not all corners or equipment have been renovated or replaced. One example is of the 3 rooms I experienced. Each had an old fashioned, window style Aircon embedded in the wall. It had no remote control to adjust the temperature or slat direction. It was operated by an On/Off switch on the built-in console in the bed headboard. Consequently the room temperature was either very cold or very warm. As a result, I caught a head cold. All 3 rooms had a very good bathroom with a bath and a rain shower. The 5th and 6th floor have inconsistent WiFi connectivity. The main bonus of this hotel is that they are on-the-ball regarding customer care. They dealt with all my requests successfully, even if it took time. Regarding breakfast: as a Western traveller, it is dismal and limited. I was the only westerner there. All other guests were eithèr oriental or maybe local. So I presume the buffet breakfast suited them, but not me. So, do I recommend this hotel? Public facilities look good and sparkle. Across the busy main road is the SM South Mall. Laundry cleaners are a 5 minute walk away. Part of the same building, there is a slot-machine casino. But I think that future customers should check the room facilities with a fine tooth comb. It may seem value for money as advertized here on Agoda. But it ended up for me not as the budget option that I had planned. Yes, the Suite No.. 1 was comfortable and the reception/housekeeping staff were excellent. If I had known in advance of the physical facility problems, I would have been able to compare it to other hotels in south metro Manila.
